Your commitment to safety leadership allows you and your team to work safely without incurring an injury or causing another to be injured by a careless act.

As a supervisor, it is your responsibility to uphold this critical piece of Valero’s culture and to continually find ways to create a safe work environment.

How do you influence a safe work environment?

Maintain Safe Workplaces

Ensure employees are adequately protected from hazards by:
  • Monitoring their workplaces frequently to identify unsafe conditions
  • Taking prompt action to correct hazardous conditions
  • Encouraging employees to report unsafe conditions
  • Setting clear expectations regarding safe work practices

Provide Education to Employees

Ensure employees are adequately trained by:
  • Discussing a safety topic at routine team meetings
  • Informing employees of the procedures to follow in the event of an emergency
  • Review the procedures with your staff regarding the reporting of a work‐related injury
  • Review the process of reporting hazardous conditions around the work location

Set a Positive Example

Influence your employees to follow your actions by:
  • Knowing and following the safety policies
  • Providing a positive feedback to employees who respect our safety culture
  • Allowing employees to monitor safety and provide them opportunities to lead efforts to sustain a safe work environment
  • Create a harassment free work environment

Note
