Build rapport with each report by:

  • Approaching conversations collaboratively
  • Being fair and consistent; not playing favorites
  • Asking employees what motivates them to perform
  • Inviting employees to come to you with questions/problems

Define Your Role

Define your role and your general expectations of performance.

Explain Leadership Style

Explain your leadership style. This helps employees understand your behaviors and how you manage situations:

  • What are your stress triggers?
  • What level of interaction do you prefer?

Discuss Communication Preferences

Discuss communication preferences with each direct report (frequency and mode: email, phone, text, and face to face).

Identify Work Assignments

Identify current work assignments and discuss the status of each.

Discuss Challenges/Roadblocks

Discuss challenges/roadblocks to the execution of current work assignments.

Offer Assistance

Offer assistance in completion of work assignments.

Engage Your Employees

Engage them in the conversation:

  • Do you have the resources to do your job successfully?
  • How can I help you be successful?
  • What are some of your performance/development goals? (Help set a timeframe and determine how goals are measured.)
  • What is the team doing well?
