What are you doing to gain trust from your employees?

How To Build Trust With Your Employees

Build a Connection

This can be something as simple as participating in small talk and finding something to connect on. Do you like the same sports team? Do you share any of the same hobbies?

Being approachable helps your team know you are there to support them, which can increase their trust in you.

Be Transparent & Honest

Share news with your employees when you can. You might not be able to discuss compensation or what the bonus will be, but you can share company news and business updates you receive at your leadership meetings.

Express Gratitude & Give Praise

Compliment employees for their ideas or achievements. When you give credit, it signals to employees that you value their efforts and believe in them.

WHY TRUST IS IMPORTANT

Trusting your employees will result in:

  • Increased communication
  • Elevated level of teamwork
  • Higher employee productivity
  • Willingness to accept advice or direction (making your job as a supervisor easier)
  • Better overall performance of the team and the company
"Trust is the highest form of human motivation. It brings out the very best in people."

Keep In Mind

Command vs. Encourage

Don’t just tell or command people what you want them to do. Motivate them to want to do the job. Motivation not only generates enthusiasm for the work, but also creates a desire to excel and achieve high levels of performance.

Play Favorites

This is a sure way to lose trust among the team. If you favor certain employees and give them information first, or if you talk badly about an employee in front of another, it immediately lowers your credibility and diminishes your trust with the employee. It is imperative to keep your integrity and professionalism in all situations.

Inconsistency

Employees can lose trust in supervisors who act and speak inconsistently. Supervisors also cause confusion when they give different directions or create contradictory rules under similar circumstances.
